Adopting from Great Plains Pointer Rescue is a careful matching process. We prioritize a long-term match over a quick placement. Because our dogs live in foster homes across Nebraska and Iowa, we get to know each dog’s real behavior and needs before adoption.
About the breed
German Shorthaired Pointers are intelligent, athletic, and driven dogs that need substantial structure, exercise, and mental engagement. They are not a good fit for low-activity households, people who work long hours without backup care, inexperienced owners unwilling to invest in training, or anyone seeking a low-maintenance companion. All dogs must live indoors with their families, and any existing household pets must be spayed or neutered.
Our adoption process
- Review available dogs and submit an online application.
- Arrange personal and veterinary references.
- Participate in a home visit conducted by a volunteer.
- Await Board of Directors review and approval.
- Connect with the dog’s foster parent to exchange information.
- Attend a meet-and-greet with all household members present.
- Finalize the adoption if both parties agree.
Adoption fees and health
Fees are based on age only and support veterinary care, spay/neuter, vaccinations, and microchipping. We are transparent about medical and behavioral information, though rescue dogs may change during their adjustment period, and adopters should expect ongoing training needs.
Coverage and returns
We serve Nebraska and Iowa. Applicants outside these states should contact us first. Dogs cannot be rehomed without the rescue’s approval.
